CATL accelerates batteries expansion with planned 150GWh production site in China

China-based battery giant CATL has signed a deal to build the first phase of an expected 150GWh lithium-ion battery manufacturing complex in the country’s southern Guangdong Province.
CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology) will invest CNY12bn (£1.4bn) to build the first phase of the project – with a design production capacity of 25GWh – under a cooperation agreement with Guangdong’s provincial government, the Zhaoqing municipal government and local agencies and businesses.
Manufacturing capacity is expected to ramp up to 150GWh by 2030, CATL said. Production will include power battery cells, lithium battery materials, energy storage applications, battery recycling, new energy vehicles and drive motors.
'Closed-loop chain'
A statement released by the company said: "With the general trend of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality becoming a global consensus, this strategic cooperation is not only an important layout for CATL to build a closed-loop power battery industry chain and enhance global competitiveness, but also help Guangdong build a world-leading new energy source.”
"The comprehensive industrial base is of great significance to the acceleration of the national strategy of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the strategic fulcrum for Guangdong Province to create a new development pattern.”
CATL’s announcement marks the latest stage of an aggressive investment programme. Ongoing projects include the construction of a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Thuringia, Germany – the company’s first such facility outside China.
