Miedreich to succeed Grynberg as Umicore CEO

Umicore has announced that Mathias Miedreich is to succeed Marc Grynberg as CEO of the group in the fourth quarter of this year.
Miedreich, 46, a German national, is currently an executive committee member of global automotive supplier Faurecia. He has served as executive VP of Faurecia’s clean mobility division since 2019.
The Belgian battery materials supplier said Grynberg and Miedreich will work together to ensure "a smooth leadership transition”.
Umicore supervisory board chairman, Thomas Leysen, said Grynberg will be nominated to join the supervisory board at a shareholders’ meeting in 2023, for the company to retain his "unrivalled knowledge of Umicore and its markets, as well as his strategic insights”.
'Worthy successor'
Leysen said the nomination would follow "an appropriate interval, so as to ensure the required autonomy of the new CEO”.
"We had set the bar very high to find a worthy successor for Marc and we are convinced that Mathias has what it takes to successfully lead Umicore in the next phase of its development,” Leysen said.
World Battery News reported last month that Umicore had signed a non-exclusive patent cross-licensing deal with German chemical multinational, BASF, that paved the way for "more sustainable and innovative” battery materials development.
Umicore has recently joined mining firms CMOC, Eurasian Resources Group and Glencore, in a pilot project to track responsibly-produced cobalt from the mine to electric vehicles using blockchain technology.
