CATL, Daimler in Li-ion battery packs supply and development deal

China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has signed a lithium-ion battery packs supply deal with Daimler Trucks for its Mercedes-Benz ‘eActros LongHaul’ electric trucks.
And the Chinese lithium-ion battery maker said it will also work with Daimler to design and develop next-generation cells and battery packs for "suitable trucks”.
Under the agreement, CATL will supply battery packs for the trucks scheduled to be mass-produced by 2024, with a supply period beyond 2030.
Daimler Trucks board chairman Martin Daum said the agreement would deepen the companies’ partnership and "play a key role in accelerating our electrification process and leading the truck industry to zero emissions”.
Battery materials
Last September, Daimler Trucks announced the launch of the eActros LongHaul, with a range of 500 km. The move followed an earlier global supply agreement with CATL for lithium battery cells and modules for the 'eActros', 'Flina eCascadia' and 'Flena eM2' models.
Earlier this year, CATL strengthened its hold on the battery materials market by taking a stake in an undeveloped copper-cobalt mining project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The company also signed a deal with China’s Zhaoqing municipal government and local agencies and businesses, to build the first phase of an expected 150 GWh lithium-ion battery manufacturing complex in southern Guangdong Province.
