Exide Technologies launches on-site solar and battery storage for its factory in Portugal

Lead battery giant Exide Technologies has launched a solar-storage installation at its Castanheira do Ribatejo battery facility in Portugal, in a project with Portuguese multinational utility EDP.
Exide’s high-performance Sonnenschein A600 gel battery technology is at the heart of the installation’s energy storage system.
The project follows Exide’s introduction of a solar installation at its Portuguese battery recycling facility in Azambuja last year – and now the battery manufacturer has a combined capacity of 4.5 MWp, with 500 kWh of storage from the bank of Sonnenschein batteries.
The installations comprise a total of about 11,250 photovoltaic panels and 70 inverters, which Exide said would produce enough energy to supply more than 1,500 homes.
'High-performance storage'
And the installations will reduce carbon emissions by 23% at the Castanheira factory and by 19% at the recycling plant.
Stefan Stübing, CEO and president of Exide Technologies, said: "Our Castanheira plant is one of the largest installations of its kind, and shows what can be achieved by combining solar with high-performance energy storage technology.”
"More companies will rely on storage-backed self-generated power in the years ahead, and we are excited to be at the forefront of this trend,” Stübing said. "Our Sonnenschein A600 gel battery technology is extremely capable in this application.”
The Sonnenschein A600 is manufactured in Exide’s European production facilities. The original gel technology is maintenance free, uses a tubular plate design and offers a long service life and protection against deep discharge – as well as being completely recyclable.
