Morrow Batteries appoints former Samsung VP Maier to lead Norway gigafactory project

Norwegian lithium-ion battery cell developer, Morrow Batteries, has appointed Dr Andreas Maier as executive VP for manufacturing – to lead development and construction of the company’s planned gigafactory in the southern Norway region of Agder.
Maier is a former VP for quality at South Korean battery maker Samsung SDI, where he oversaw development of cell production in Korea, China and Hungary, ensuring tier 1-qualification as a supplier to the automotive industry.
Morrow CEO Terje Andersen said: "Technology is developing fast, and with Dr Maier on the team, we have secured expertise and a solid know-how when it comes to developing and manufacturing high-quality battery cells for EV cars.”
Sustainable batteries
Earlier this year, Morrow said it would work with Dutch start-up, Delft IMP, to investigate the use of ultra-thin coating technologies to produce lower cost and more sustainable batteries.
The project announcement came after Morrow confirmed plans to build its Morrow Industrialization Centre – as a precursor to construction of its 32 GWh lithium-ion battery cells manufacturing plant.
The first phase of construction of Morrow’s full-scale gigafactory, at the Eyde Energipark in Agder, is set to start in 2023.
Morrow has signed a letter of intent with Danish chemical company, Haldor Topsoe, for its pilot factory to develop cobalt-free lithium-nickel-manganese oxide (LNMO) battery cells.
