VW battery systems production under way at EV plants in China

Battery systems and electric vehicles production is now under way at Volkswagen's plants in Foshan and Anting, China, the group has announced.

VW said Foshan, in southern Guangdong Province and Anting, near Shanghai, have a combined, planned annual production capacity, of up to 600,000 units of its lithium-ion based modular electric drive kits (MEBs).

The MEBs comprise different numbers of battery modules, depending on the required vehicle range, with each module containing 12 lithium-ion battery cells.

The ‘base version’ of the battery has a 45kWh capacity and a WLTP (worldwide harmonised light vehicle test procedure) range of up to 330km. 

Renewable energy

VW’s ID.4 X and ID.4 CROZZ cars are the first two pure-electric models to be introduced in China on the MEB platform, with three other ‘ID’ family models planned for production in 2021.

At Foshan, all MEB vehicles will be produced with renewable energy, making the production process CO2-neutral, VW said. Some 200,000 square meters of solar panels have been installed to provide the factory with 8.2MW of electricity and "an overall production of 9,000MWh per year of renewable energy”.

Solar power generation will also contribute to climate-friendly production at Anting, VW said.

VW China CEO Dr Stephan Wöllenstein said the MEB platform would "revolutionise the new electric vehicle market".

"The MEB provides unique versatility and is an incredibly flexible platform for vehicle production, meaning we can offer customers a wide range of highly-attractive electric models, from compact city cars to spacious buses or SUVs.”
